Nokia N95-1 firmware updated with demand paging capability

I’ve been using a Nokia N95-1 off and on for the last 7 months and even though it may not be perfect, it is one amazing device that I keep going back to after trying something new. I just read on All About Symbian that the anticipated firmware update is now available for this device. As detailed at All About Symbian, this latest firmware update adds the following features:

  • New Welcome application
  • New camera software and tweaks from the 8GB model - FAR faster shot to shot time, with ‘Processing image message’ during any delays
  • Long press on camera button launches camera if shutter is open, rather than having to pen and close shutter
  • New My Nokia SMS tips and mobile web portal system
  • Demand paging (for ROM applications) with 30 plus MB free RAM after booting.
  • Search 4.0 integration on standby screen.
  • N-Gage game previews (FIFA, Asphalt) and portal/shortcut to upcoming N-Gage client, as in N81 8GB
  • Nokia Music Store client,

Steve also stated that the keypress bug (sometimes you have to hit a key twice) may be gone. Keep in mind that when you perform the update the on board memory will be erased so backup your content prior to updating your device. I am pretty sure there are reminders for this in the update process too. I have a TON of 3rd party applications loaded on the device and may have to spend a few hours getting the device back up and running how I like it after the update.

IMHO, the most significant feature is demand paging due to the limited amount of RAM on the N95-1. For most details on demand paging check out the Symbian page on the subject. As you can see demand paging lightens the load on the RAM so that performance is optimized. I read a couple of comments from people who have performed the update that the N95 is now much faster. Hopefully, I never see another “Out of memory” error on the N95.

Are you using T-Mobile service? If so, I guess you can't get the benefit of the 3G radio.
