Did open source make Green go at VMWare?
Diane Green Greene has been shown the door at VMWare, the company she founded.
Another victim of open source? Possibly.
Ironically, Green Greene told our Dan Farber two years ago “the industry goes at Microsoft’s cadence,” and she’s being replaced by a former Microsoft executive, Paul Maritz.
VMWare shares are down under $40 and EMC Corp., which owns more than half of VMWare, is down too.
Open source has been a part of virtualization for 10 years, with products like Xen given serious consideration in the enterprise.
It Maritz can turn things around with a proprietary strategy, it may be that management was to blame. If he can’t, maybe not.
So who do you think deserves the blame? Management? Open source? Or was virtualization just a bubble which was bound to be popped?
