The new buzzword is hybrid
Hybrid is one of the big words of 2008. (Shown is a liger, a hybrid of a lion and a tiger. From National Geographic.)
Most people think of it in terms of energy, hybrid vehicles. But it also refers to software, a mixture of closed and open source code.
Black Duck is on board the new buzzword train with the latest release, Version 1.4, of its Code Center product, which was originally developed to manage open source projects.
It’s all about the hybrid code.
In its press release Black Duck references a recent IDC study showing that 47 percent of organizations use some types of outside work — contractors and outsourcers as well as open source.
As an IDC analyst who authored a whitepaper for Black Duck put it, “Developers are routinely downloading or even cutting and pasting code – in some cases without understanding implications.”
Are you worried about where your code comes from? Closed source obscures its sources. Open source puts them in the open.
Who should be more worried?
