Datamation's 200: I'm Howard Stern and Larry is a Greek Philosopher
Datamation’s Top 200 Tech Blogs list.
I was most pleased today by the release of the Datamation Top 200 Tech Blogs list, which aspires to be the veritable ZAGAT Guide to technology writing. Unlike other competing lists, like our sister network CNET’s own Blog 100 or the Techmeme Leaderboard (which is generated based on an algorithm on who’s stories get the most exposure) Datamation editor James Maguire is compiling this list by hand and sorting through everyone else’s content, seeking to provide quality control and editorial oversight to the list. This is an admitted work in progress, and Maguire is even inviting others to submit blogs to the list for possible inclusion.

While we at CNET and ZDNet openly compete with Jupitermedia, Datamation’s parent company, I applaud what Maguire is doing and see the potential for providing exposure to the works of some lesser known writers who really “Get it”. He’s also adding some semblance of organization and categorization to the list, such as those writers that cover Major OS platforms versus gadgets and consumer electronics and enterprise systems.
I’m also happy to see that ZDNet’s best writers are getting their fair share of exposure here, although the organization and prioritization of some of the most important bloggers needs some work. Larry Dignan, Mary Jo Foley and myself are lumped under the general banner of the ZDNet Blogs entry in the Tech Publications category (I am bemused by my description as “uncensored” while Dignan is “Peripatetic” — and envisioning him wearing a toga and lecturing from a marble podium seems strangely and hilariously appropriate) but Ed Bott is given separate recognition for his in-depth Windows knowledge. While I am glad to see ZDNet get its due credit, in the future, I’d like to see each major tech pub have their own subsection, with the individual bloggers having their own entry. It may make sense for Maguire and Datamation to do this with some sort of web-based database app.
