A number of websites are reporting that there will be 6 different versions of Windows Vista released later this year. Microsoft hasn’t commented or made any announcement on this, but the information was spotted on a Microsoft help page under development (currently offline). It named six primary versions of the upcoming PC operating system, plus two without Windows Media Player - due to the European Commission’s antitrust ruling.

Here’s the list of the primary six:

  • Windows Starter 2007
  • Windows Vista Home Basic (Starter and Home Basic are both family computers)
  • Windows Vista Home Premium (Entertainment and productivity focused)
  • Windows Vista Business
  • Windows Vista Enterprise (Business and Enterprise are self-explanatory)
  • Windows Vista Ultimate ("The Best - has everything")

There is some talk about whether the above list is correct, because it doesn’t include Windows Vista Small Business edition. Paul Thurrott has a detailed preview (including of the image displayed in this post).

Personally I’m wondering what the Ultimate will have in it to live up to a name like that!
