There's much to love about Facebook, but the thing I'm most hooked on at the moment is seeing what you're reading. I know what you're reading, that is, if you're sharing items using Google Reader, you've added the Google Reader Shared Items Facebook application (and pointed it at your Shared Items), and we're friends or have joined the same group at some point. If so, chances are I've subscribed to your Shared Items in Google Reader. That's 25 of you so far, along with 69 other feeds. It's no Scoble-sized subscription list, but it's still a youngster, just a few days old. The 25 "Shared Items" feeds on my subscription list are by far the ...

Google unveiled Tuesday its latest initiative to court small businesses--a custom search tool dubbed Google Custom Search Business Edition. Google's small business search allows companies to add Google search to their web sites. Google adds: In three simple steps, businesses can sign up online for the hosted service, and in less than 10 minutes customers and visitors are able to search their site using the power of Google's search technology, for more relevant results. The game plan: Get em hosted. Then get them Google Apps. Just like the purchase of Postini, Google is taking away things that folks may use as an excuse to not use Google Apps. With the small business search it's about getting small businesses in the door. Dave ...

How much of an effect did Microsoft's decision to award prizes for search-based games drive up its search marketshare for the month of June? If you put your stock in numbers released last week by Compete, it would seem like Microsoft's Live Search Club was a huge driver of a substantial surge in Microsoft search traffic. If you rely on newly released data from ComScore, Microsoft's gain is a lot more modest -- although still impressive. Whichever set of data you believe, Microsoft's search share definitely rose in a noticeable way last month. ComScore's new search market share data, released July 16, has Microsoft up 2.9 percent in June, with 13.2 percent of all U.S. online searches. (Google had 49.5 percent ...

Google is adding another company to its stable as it increasingly targets the enterprise. With Postini, Google is looking to remove security as a roadblock to Google Apps adoption in the enterprise. Google said Monday it will acquire Postini, an on-demand communications security and compliance company, for $625 million in cash. Google's goal: Secure Google Apps and make sure security isn't a big drag on its Google Apps "revolution." Dan Farber reported Friday that Dave Girouard, general manager of Google Enterprise noted that security and compliance was a roadblock to Google Apps adoption. You could use whatever compliance system with Google Apps. The [revolution] will go faster when it s brain-dead easy to [adopt hosted apps] and you don t have to ...

Google is adding JotSpot, which the company acquired in October 2006, to the Google Apps, according to Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of Google Enterprise. Google Apps currently includes mail, calendar, instant messaging, Web page creation, documents and spreadsheets. JotSpot will bring wikis and easy to build team Web sites to the suite. The company has been in the process of moving JotSpot to the Google infrastructure to gain reliability and scale efficiencies, Girouard said, but he didn't disclose when JotSpot would become available. Girouard was speaking on a panel at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Alumni 2007 Global Conference. He said that Google is getting 1,000 to 2,000 new businesses per day signed up Google Apps. He also ...

Google acquired the last piece of its Google Office puzzle. Google bought Zenter, a company that creates online slide presentations. With the purchase Google has one of the last pieces for its presentation tool--GooglePoint if you will. Google engineering director Sam Schillace said it's all about sharing in a blog post: You've heard us talk a lot about using the web to improve group collaboration and information sharing. These days, when you create a document -- whether it's a text document, a spreadsheet, or a presentation -- you usually want to share it, collect feedback, or communicate about it in some way. We on the Google Docs & Spreadsheets team focus on making this experience easier and more powerful for you. In ...

In mapping out the online office suite landscape, Zoho stood out as the most expansive and ambitious undertaking. Almost every week the company makes an announcement about a new application or feature. This week Zoho s Web conferencing application, Meeting, was opened for public beta. Next week Zoho for iPhone, which nicely presents Zoho apps within Safari on the smaller screen. (Zoho's Raju Vegesna: Zoho for iPhone is just an internal fun project we considered. I doubt if we will ever release it.) Over the next few months the company is releasing Zoho Desktop, a user console for managing Zoho application and documents, and a Business edition that incorporates an administrative interface for managing users and applications.
The evolving Office suite landscape

For decades Microsoft Office has dominated the productivity software landscape. The latest iteration, Office 2007, was released in late January, and it continues to thrive. Other office suites sailing in the same waters, such as WordPerfect Office and OpenOffice.org, have failed to slow down Microsoft s Office. Today the landscape is shifting, with cloud-based, on demand office suites built with collaboration in mind nibbling at Microsoft s ankles. Google Apps is most often mentioned online Microsoft Office competitor, especially Google Docs & Spreadsheets, but that has more to do with the powerful presence of Google than the competitiveness of its applications. ThinkFree has both a desktop- and online-based office suite, including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation modules that are 'compatible' with Microsoft Office. Zoho has the ...
