Nokia's first Ovi branded services product was launched at Mobile World Congress 2008 and is now available for you to use for free. Twango was purchased by Nokia last year and the new Share on Ovi is the much improved version of Twango. You will actually still see some Twango branding on parts of the site as Nokia works to integrate the service. There are several other services that will be branded under the Ovi name, including N-Gage, Nokia Music, and Nokia Maps. I had the opportunity to meet with several people at the Nokia booth and Serena Glover did a fantastic job presenting on the features and benefits of using Share on Ovi.
Opera Software announced that Opera Mobile 9.5 would be coming soon and would be shown at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona. I had a chance to visit the Opera Software booth and spoke with a product manager who ran through this latest mobile browser on a Sony Ericsson UIQ device. You can see some of the features of Opera Mobile 9.5 in action in the following video. The HTC Advantage I have been using for several months comes with Opera Mobile 8.5 preloaded in the ROM and is actually the selected default browser on the device. Opera Mobile 8.5 makes the device much more useful for me since I find Internet Explorer Mobile to be a weak mobile browser. ...

While the Nseries products are very impressive multi-media computers, the latest Nokia device that really caught my attention at the Mobile World Congress event was the Nokia 6210 Navigator. The saddest part of my various experiences with the device is that we may never see it available here in the U.S. and I am quite jealous of Europeans who will get it before the end of 2008. There are a couple of features and services that make this such a compelling device for the regular business traveler. Nokia is including Nokia Maps 2.0 and all the subscription navigation services that would normally cost EUR69 per year for 3 years for free. The thought is that it will be rare for ...

S60 will be adding touch to their platform this year with the first devices scheduled for late 2008. I had a chance to check out the S60 interface that was running on a PC. While touch is probably necessary since the iPhone, Microsoft and Symbian UIQ all have it, I have to say it is not that exciting to me and is just S60 that can be navigated with a finger or stylus. Microsoft has had touch for several years and while there are many fans, it hasn't seem to have taken off because it requires more than just touch to compel people to use touch. It is still early in the development of S60 touch so we may see ...

A report about a panel session on mobile user experience at Barcelona's Mobile World Congress shows that only Apple "gets it." And if the industry's experience with the iPod is anything to go by, this situation will only get worse for the competition. According to an EE Times story by David Benjamin from Barcelona, the innovations in the mobile telcom space is coming from Apple. One panelist said that 77 percent of iPhone users rated their experience as "very satisfied." One direction, advocated by Lucia Predolin, international marketing and communications director for Buongirono S.p.A. of Milan, Italy, is to manipulate users by identifying their "need states" including such compulsions as "killing time," and "making the most of it" and fulfilling ...

On my Nokia N95 there is a search plug-in on the standby screen that provides a shortcut to search on my device or via the internet. Previously, you had a choice between Windows Live Search or Yahoo Search. This week Nokia announced that Google search will be implemented in the future as well. The four new devices (the N96, N78, 6210 Navigator, and 6220 Classic) will have it integrated and eventually everyone will be able to download an update to the Nokia Search application. In addition to internet searches, Nokia Search acts like a desktop search tool in that you can search for files on your device or storage card. All the details were revealed at the show and I had a chance to meet with them this morning. The modu is a very small 1.5 ounce device that serves as the brains of a mobile phone that can then be placed in jackets or mates to extend the functionality and design, depending on a users needs. The modu device itself is a fully capable mobile phone that has internal memory ranging from 1GB to 16GB, runs on a TI processor, has a Bluetooth radio with A2DP support, functions as an MP3 player, and has a quad-band GSM phone. HTC has made some strides in adding some flair to Windows Mobile, but SE looks like they took it even further with this latest device that is scheduled for release in the second half of 2008. Good news for us T-Mobile USA subscribers is that the 1700 MHz band is supported and this will be my next device from T-Mobile. There is a video below showing the device demo being shown here at MWC.
Vincent Nguyen over at Phone Magazine posted a video of Android software running on off-the-shelf hardware at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The phone, by Chinese manufacturer E28, is currently shipping with Linux and a custom software stack. But E28 says it was relatively easy to port Android to the device, even given its modest specs (200MHz OMAP TI730 chipset with 64MB RAM). Android runs with no modifications, and the E28 team were even able to download applications coded for the platform from the internet and install them directly to the handset. This, then, is some of that unlocked, open-source simplicity we were promised when the platform was first announced. E28 showed several Android applications running on the phone, such ...

One that I plan to load very soon on my S60 Nseries devices is the upgraded Nokia Maps 2.0. One of the primary features that I personally cannot wait to try out and that I was happy to see is the extended pedestrian navigation functionality. Nokia recognized that there were many people, like myself, who take public transportation and then walk around cities. We now have GPS navigation software that helps us know where we are and how to get to where we want to be.
In an interview with the BBC, Rich Miner, Google's VP for Mobile technology said Google is "marching to plan" from what they announced in November. While developers have been creating programs with the Android SDK since then, many consider the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona to be Android's coming-out party. At this show, we're launching tomorrow morning a refresh of that software development kit with a significantly improved user interface and lots of additional capabilities. Around the show you'll see our partners demonstrating Android running on a number of different mobile phone platforms.
