Drew Wilson at Zero Paid points out that Napster celebrates its 10th birthday this month. The Globe and Mail takes a deeper look in its Download Decade series. In the last decade, iTunes, Amazon, and various subscription music services have demonstrated there's a vast audience more than willing to pay for entertainment downloads given the right mix of value and convenience, though pricing and freedom from DRM remain sticking points. At the same time, lawsuits against individual alleged file sharers march forward, and the entertainment industry has not relented in its pursuit of what it perceives as Napster's successors (e.g., Pirate Bay, Real DVD). Which prompts me to wonder: in the ten years since Napster ...

James is one person not happy about it and echoes many of the comments made on the MSDN blog post. Brett is not happy either and made it a point to show how there are third party browsers that exceed anything Microsoft currently has with Internet Explorer Mobile and what it looks like Internet Explorer Mobile 6 may also support. Microsoft revealed Windows Mobile 6.1 and Internet Explorer Mobile 6 at CTIA in April and most ...

There's a new GMail Labs app: Mail Goggles, by GMail engineer Jon Perlow: When you enable Mail Goggles, it will check that you're really sure you want to send that late night Friday email. And what better way to check than by making you solve a few simple math problems after you click send to verify you're in the right state of mind? ... Hopefully Mail Goggles will prevent many of you out there from sending messages you wish you hadn't. Like that late night memo -- I mean mission statement -- to the entire firm. Jon's idea is lighthearted and fun, but when you look past the humor and consider it more broadly it's quite brilliant. The ...

In addition to finding intricacies in people's behaviors related to natural disasters, fears and buying behaviors, Tancer states that searching for social networking sites has overtaken the search for Internet porn. According to the article: "Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise, an Internet tracking company, said one of the major shifts in Internet use in the past decade had been the fall off in interest in pornography or adult entertainment sites. He said surfing for porn had dropped to about 10 percent of searches ...

I did an immediate double-take. I think my audible reaction was, "Eek!" Turns out that Fitton was talking about a free service called Xpenser. Here's a quick snippet in the company's own words: We were fed up with how painful expense reports and tracking were. After many experiments we found a workable solution: record expenses as soon as they happen and forget about them. Xpenser lets you do just that - record expenses via whatever means are available to you quickly and ...

One of the major benefits for me that gets me using and eventually buying mobile software applications is the ability to try a full, or even limited, version for 14 to 30 days on my devices to see if the application truly fits my needs and is worth the cost. There are NO trial applications that I can find on the iPhone Application store. Granted, the applications mostly range from something like US$3 to US$9.99, but ...

By any measure the Nintendo Wii has been a tremendous success. Thanks to its low price and innovative design the Wii continues to outsell all other next generation consoles. It's fast, quiet, and cool. So why mess with success? That's why I'm always puzzled when people request Nintendo put a hard drive on the Wii. ComputerAndVideoGames.com writes "Have you filled up your Wii's internal memory yet? We have and it's bloody annoying." Well I haven't and I've been playing it hard since buying one from a scalper ebayer last Christmas. CVG writer Mike Jackson takes Nintendo to task for the omission. Scott Bourne had an interesting (if inconclusive) post on the subject last year, and the head lemur posits that the touchstone (in the context of the Target case presently in the news) may be whether or not you're doing e-commerce. I'm out of my depth with accessibility law, but the subject has certainly come up and intrigued us for the last two years in the legal session at the Podcast and New Media Expo. My thinking, uninformed as it is, is that Web accessibility and video/podcast accessibility are different animals. Since podcasts aren't going out over any FCC-regulated spectrum, perhaps their accessibility ...

During the Q1 FY08 investor conference call this week, Ed Colligan stated that the new Palm Linux-based OS should be available by the end of 2008. This usually means it goes out first and then devices have to be developed with the OS so I imagine we won't see these devices until early 2009, unless things get delayed again. I started with Palm OS devices and know there are many excellent people at Palm working hard to create good products, but the Palm OS hasn't undergone a major update since 2002 (June is when OS ...

A Dutch study shows radiation from data-enabled cell phones can interfere with critical hospital equipment from as far away as 3 meters -- that's 10 feet. The research team examined the effects of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) signals on critical care equipment such as ventilators and pacemakers. Almost 50 EMI incidents were recorded; 75% were significant or hazardous. Hazardous incidents varied from a total switch off and restart of mechanical ventilator and complete stops without alarms in syringe pumps to incorrect pulsing by an external pacemaker. One of the key differences between the two quad-core systems that I'm building will be how much hard drive capacity each ends up with. This is because one of the quad-core systems will be mine and the other will belong to my wife, Kathie, and we have very different needs when it comes to drive capacity. Each system will start off with the 150GB offered by the Western Digital RaptorX drive, but beyond that we'll customize the drives to suit our individual needs. To be honest, I really don't need a lot of drive space. I have a music library that's about 10GB, an audiobook library that adds another 5GB, about 25GB ...

Many Windows users claim also that Apple users love anything that comes out of Cupertino and would spend their last breath defending it. Is it true? I, for one, am not an Apple apologist. Nor am I an Apple cheerleader. But Mac users are a proud bunch, to be sure. We love our machines. I've found that Mac users can't wait to use their machines (when they get home from work for example) whereas Windows users can't wait to get away from their computers because they associate them with work.
